School Designs
Beginning winter 2008, The Cambodia Project is committed to building secondary schools in Kep municipality and Kampot province, three hours drive south of the capital Phnom Penh. We will provide high quality secondary-level education opportunities and inclusive development programs that would not otherwise be available to rural children in these areas. CPI receives pro bono support in architecture designs from Michiels Architecture & Partners in Washington, DC, as well as professional advice in engineering from Engineers Without Borders New York.
CPI will use this model to build three schools by 2012 with each school designed to serve 980 children. The teacher to student ratio is 1:22. Each school will be built with a three-year approach. Year 1 construction includes 15 classrooms, a library, a dormitory, a health clinic, an auditorium, recreational facilities, and a community garden. Ten more classrooms will be added in year 2. In year 3, along with three additional classrooms, CPI will incorporate environmentally friendly technology that includes rooftop terraces, cross ventilation, solar voltaic panels, and rain-water capturing.
